Millicent is a Charleston native and lifelong participant in civil rights activism.  She is a retired Associate Professor of 20th Century U.S. History and Women's History at Claflin University.  She serves as director of a national research project, Somebody Had To Do It, that collects narratives of school segregation pioneers and advises a number of Southeast museums on civil rights oral and public history.  A similar oral history initiative under her direction, Somebody Still Has To Do It, advocates for prisoner reentry into society.  Dr. Brown holds a B. A. from the College of Charleston, an M. Ed. from The Citadel, and a Ph. D. from Florida State University.  In addition to teaching at Claflin University, she has been on the faculty at North Carolina A & T State University, Guilford College, and Bennett College.
