Blocking Gender Changes on Birth Certificates (S. 162)

  • Status: Active
  • Position: Oppose
  • Bill Number: S. 162
  • Session: 126th General Assembly (2025-2026)
  • Latest Update: January 14, 2026
We oppose S. 162

Senate Bill 162 would only allow changes to the gender on a birth certificate within 12 months of a person’s birth. It would also define “gender” in state law to reflect sex assigned at birth, applying a political definition instead of a scientifically accurate one.

We oppose this bill because: S. 162 is one of many bills this session written specifically to discriminate against transgender people. If passed, this bill would make it impossible for transgender people to change the gender marker on their birth certificate to accurately reflect who they are.
