Proof of Citizenship for Voter Registration (S. 128)

This bill would add a new obstacle for South Carolinians seeking to register to vote. All prospective voters would be required to show evidence of U.S. citizenship.

We oppose this bill because: Most South Carolinians do not vote. Setting up additional hurdles for voter registration is one way to drive down voter participation even further. Bills like this also serve to chill and disenfranchise immigrant communities.
