Mandatory Minimum Sentencing for Attempted Murder (H. 4713)

  • Status: Active
  • Position: Oppose
  • Bill Number: H. 4713
  • Session: 126th General Assembly (2025-2026)
  • Latest Update: Jan 13, 2026
We oppose H. 4713

Summary

This bill would create a mandatory minimum prison sentence of five years for a person convicted of attempted murder.

We oppose this bill because: Mandatory minimums do nothing to combat crime and violence, but they are known to further exacerbate the issue of overcrowding in prisons and racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

South Carolina already incarcerates a greater share of its population than most countries on earth. Doubling down on failed mass-incarceration policies will not make us safer.
