"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

The authors of the Declaration of Independence outlined a bold vision for America, a nation in which all people would be free and equal. While the law provides equal opportunity in theory, it is too often denied in fact and discrimination, in numerous forms, exists to this day.

The ACLU fights discriminatory practices in many arenas: challenging racial profiling, protecting voting rights, fighting for equality in public education, advocating for the rights of immigrant workers, supporting laws that protect the rights of people with disabilities, and much more.
