State House Dispatch: This Week Under the Copper Dome

Lawmakers are in a sprint to the finish of the first half of their two-year session. This means that for each of the items considered at the State House, there is an increasing urgency for both lawmakers and for us. We have a few things to do this week, and letting lawmakers hear from us is absolutely critical.

Abortion is Healthcare

The Senate is expected to take up a near total abortion ban today. The exceptions to the ban are narrow, onerous, and therefore pretty ineffective. Luckily, there are lots of ways for you to be heard on abortion this week.

Sign up for phone banking, and call legislators to let them know you expect them to reject these abortion bans. Phone banking opportunities are available through Thursday of this week.

Public Aid for Private Ed Via Vouchers

the House is expected to take up the voucher bill on Wednesday. This bill is another iteration of the one previously considered this session, but the result is the same: moving public funds out of the public education system and routing them to schools that can discriminate against students and deny them enrollment based on gender, religion, or academic aptitude. We must demand a fully funded public education system where all students are welcomed.

Classroom Censorship

Pleas continue to share your testimonies related to the classroom censorship bill with us! We want to make sure lawmakers have an opportunity to hear from students, parents, and educators especially in the event this bill heads to the Senate floor. Should the Senate decide to take up this bill in the final days of this session, they will move quickly. We want to be sure we are ready to move quickly, too.
